Hydrolysis and Condensation Process

Mar 31, 2023

Hydrolysis condensation is the most important process in the synthesis of silicone resin. Generally, the hydrolysis condensation process involves evenly mixing methyl chlorosilane and methyl phenyl chlorosilane in a prescribed proportion with solvents such as toluene and xylene, and slowly adding them to excess water (or water and other solvents) under stirring for hydrolysis. During hydrolysis, maintain a certain temperature, and after hydrolysis, allow to stand until the silica alcohol and acid water are layered. Then, discharge the lower layer of acid water, and then wash the silica alcohol with water to neutral.

After hydrolysis, the co condensation polymerization between the components and the self condensation polymerization of the molecules themselves are competitive reactions. If the concentration of the components per unit volume is large, the distance between the molecules is small, and there are many chances of collision with each other, and the reaction mechanisms of the components due to the collision of their functional groups with each other will be more, the co condensation polymerization will have an advantage; "If the molecular concentration per unit volume is low, the distance between the molecules of each component is large, and there is less chance of collision with each other, the chances of reaction with functional genes contained in the molecule itself are relatively increased, and the reaction of self condensation of the molecule itself takes advantage.".

After hydrolysis of silicon, silicanols are formed. In addition to continuing to polycondensate into linear or branched oligomers, the molecules themselves can also polycondensate into rings. The formation of ring bodies consumes the functional groups (light groups) in the components, reducing the chances of intermolecular polycondensation of each component, which is detrimental to the formation of homogeneous polycondensation. After hydrolysis, there are many cyclic bodies in the components, and the greater the heterogeneity of the molecular structure, the greater the difference in the performance of the final product.

When co hydrolyzing various monomers, although the formulation is the same, the components and cycloid formation amount of the hydrolysate often vary greatly due to different controlled hydrolysis conditions.

The formation of organosilicon ring bodies is the result of the reaction of certain chain length silicone alcohol inner tibial groups with each other and self condensation polymerization. "If the internal stress between the molecular chains in the ring is smaller, the ring becomes more stable, and more N is generated.". For example, when dimethyldichlorosilane is hydrolyzed, tricyclic bodies, tetracyclic bodies, and pentacyclic bodies are formed, with a large amount of tetracyclic bodies.

The main factors affecting the hydrolysis reaction include monomer structure, water consumption, pH value of the medium, and hydrolysis temperature.
